Lucky Strike
brand was first introduced as a smoking mixture. R.A. Patterson Company did it
in Richmond, Virginia (which is known to be the home of the finest tobacco in
the world). Year 1916 saw the introduction of Lucky Strike as a brand of cigarettes
with the package designed in dark green colors. Lucky Strike is manufactured by
the American Tobacco Company.
Lucky
Strike was one of the first cigarette brands to implement the technology of toasting
the tobacco instead of sun drying. This technology was reflected in the slogan
"It's Toasted".
1942
was the year of the package redesign. The color was switched to white. This redesign
was attached to the absolutely creative advertising campaign under the slogan
"Lucky Strike Green has gone to war". The company explained design changes
with the fact of the green color needing the copper. And the copper was much more
demanded on the battlefields. The fact is that American Tobacco used chromium
to manufacture green ink and copper was used for trimming. However, the supply
of both materials was limited, so the company decided to introduce the white package.
To reduce costs and appeal to female smokers, not to help the war.
Brown
& Williamson purchased the US and export rights on Lucky Strike twice
in 1978 and 1994. Only in 1996 the first filtered Lucky Strikes were introduced
in San Francisco, but it took the brand three years to spread across the United
States.
Lucky
Strike cigarettes are actively promoted through the sponsorship of the popular
television shows, BAR Honda team in the Formula One Championship, various reality
shows etc.
