Mission Mozambique Part 1 of 3

Massive flood in Mozambique Africa displaced thousands of family’s left with nothing but the clothes on their back (if they had any). We went down there to distribute rice and beanns to different refugee camps as well as to spread the light, the glory, and the saving power of God. This is our experience down there. For some this video is not what they expect. Some expect to see dispair, poverty, suffering and sadness. We wanted to show Africa as a normal, joyful group of people. Africa is not just a place of suffering but a place of JOY. Some were happier than most people in North America (not because of the material things they had, but because of the spiritual things they had). We think that we can go over there and “help them” and “save them”, but they could teach us ALOT of things as well. This is our experience there, bringing food, prayer, friendship, and joy, as well as recieving these things from them.

24. Students’ Choice Novel: Jonathan Safran Foer, Everything is Illuminated

The American Novel Since 1945 (ENGL 291) In this first of two lectures on the students’ choice end-of-semester novel, Jonathan Safran Foer’s Everything is Illuminated (2002), Professor Hungerford models several methods for approaching and evaluating a new work of fiction. She shows how Foer borrows and adapts themes and styles from other authors on the syllabus in service to his ambition as a writer to demonstrate the power of narrative fiction to address the great historical traumas of our time. In thus attempting to marry the nineteenth-century social novel with Postmodernist, or late Modernist, techniques, Foer participates in an emerging tradition that risks the confusion between resonant emotion and sentimental cliché. 00:00 – Chapter 1. Foer’s Formative Ambition 03:58 – Chapter 2. Dialog with the Literary Tradition 11:23 – Chapter 3. Absence at the Heart of Desire: Foer’s Negative Spaces 22:05 – Chapter 4. Bringing Together Sentiment and Formal Play: A Social Postmodern Novel 26:39 – Chapter 5. The Campus Novel 31:32 – Chapter 6. Sentiment vs. Sentimentality Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Spring 2008.

19. The Romanovs and the Russian Revolution

European Civilization, 1648-1945 (HIST 202) The period between the Russian Revolution of February 1917, which resulted in the overthrow of the autocracy and the establishment of a provisional government, and the Bolshevik Revolution in October of that same year, offers an instructive example of revolutionary processes at work. During this interval, the fate of Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra, was bound up in the struggle for power amongst competing political factions in Russia. Until his death, Nicholas was convinced that the Russian people would rescue him from his captors. Such a belief would prove to be delusional, and the efforts on the part of liberals, socialists, and some Bolsheviks to arrange for a trial would fail to save the czar from the verdict of history. 00:00 – Chapter 1. The Process of Revolution: Political Competition after the February Revolution 10:58 – Chapter 2. Czar Nicholas II, a Family Man 18:39 – Chapter 3. The Father of His People: Narod and the National Family 30:10 – Chapter 4. The Fall of the Romanovs Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Fall 2008.
